A Climate Trend Analysis of Ethiopia

چکیده
Food Security Context: Complex Patterns of Climate, Climate Change, and Livelihoods Most rural people live in the highlands and middle-highlands, which comprise only one-third of the country, and this population tends to be concentrated primarily in Oromia or northern SNNPR. The seasonality of rainfall varies in different areas of Ethiopia. In the eastern Somali region, rains come twice a year–during the March–June Belg season, and during the October–December Deyr season. In the south-central part of the country, most areas receive both Belg and summer (June–September) Kiremt rains. Many farmers plant slowly maturing but high yielding ‘long cycle’ crops that grow during both the Belg and Kiremt seasons. In 2011, Ethiopia, with a population of 90.9 million (CIA, 2011) and a population growth rate of 3.2 percent (a doubling time of 22 years), faces increased levels of food insecurity. Pre-planned assistance provided by the Productive Safety Net Program supported some 7.4 million people, whereas an additional 4.5 million people required emergency humanitarian assistance because of decreased precipitation and extremely high food prices (FEWS NET, 2011). These 4.5 million people tended to be located in the south-central, southeastern, or eastern part of the country. Approximately 65 percent of these at-risk households relied primarily on agricultural livelihoods; the remainder were pastoralists or agro-pastoralists.

Analysis of Extreme Temperature Change Trend under Future Scenarios in order to Assess Climate Fluctuations (Case Study: Sanandaj and Saghez Synoptic Stations)
Climate change is a phenomenon that has affected natural ecosystems and all aspects of human life in recent years. Therefore, identifying and predicting climate change can greatly help manage it and reduce its harmful effects. The purpose of the present study is to identify whether or not occurrence of climate change by extreme indices including TXx and TNn during 1961-2015. In addition, CanESM...
متن کاملThe survey of linkage between climate changes and desertification using extreme climate index software
Climate is the most important factor which control desertification .In order to detect climate changes in desert zones, time trend analysis is applied to extreme indices in Kashan station using extreme climate index software (ECIS). Results show significant trends in extreme indices during the past decade 1995-2004 and the pronounced warming is associated with a negative trend in cold extremes....
متن کاملImpact of Climate Variability on Cool Weather Crop Yield in Ethiopia
The research examined effect of climate variability on yield of the two dominant cool weather cereals (wheat and barley) in central highland and Arssi grain plough farming systems of Ethiopia using eight round unbalanced panel data (1994-2014). The stochastic frontier model result revealed that production inputs for producing wheat and barley in the two farming system had significant effect. Cr...
متن کاملDetermination of Climate Changes on Streamflow Process in the West of Lake Urmia With Used to Trend and Stationarity Analysis
One of the most important hydrological time series task is to determine if there is any trend in the data and how to achieve stationarity when there is nonstationarity behavior in data. Detecting trend and stationarity in hydrological time series may help us to understand the possible links between hydrological processes and global climate changes. In this study yearly, monthly and daily stream...
